Here’s a quick 3-minute video showing you how to check out your school district’s data on race/disability disparities in discipline!

And here are written instructions on how you can check out your school district’s data on race/disability disparities in discipline!

1.     Visit the national data site (US Department of Education’s Civil Rights Data Collection) https://ocrdata.ed.gov/ — don’t get anxious, this is pretty simple, and will take you no more than 10 minutes.

2.     In the top center of the page is a box for “Quick Search” – Click on “Find District” (rather than “Find School”); then go to the “State” drop-down, & click your state; then hit “Search”

3.     Scroll down the page, and you’ll find all of the districts in your state, in alpha order; look for your school district, and click on it.

4.     On the district page, scroll down a little, and look at the box on right side of the page “Special Reports and Other Profile Facts”, and click on “Discipline Report”.

5.     Scroll down, and look at the pie charts – compare the “Enrollment” pie chart slice for “Black” with the “Out of School Suspension” pie chart slice for “Black”.  Then compare the “Enrollment” pie chart slice for “Black” with the “Referrals to Law Enforcement” pie chart slice for “Black”.

6.      Scroll down more, and look at the pie charts – compare the “Enrollment” pie chart slice for “IDEA” with the “Out of School Suspension” pie chart slice for “IDEA”.  Then compare the “Enrollment” pie chart slice for “IDEA” with the “Referrals to Law Enforcement” pie chart slice for “IDEA”.
