About These Resources

These resources can help you understand and protect marginalized students’ civil rights. Organized by issues that students may face during different points in their school experience, these resources can help you learn whether a student’s civil rights have been violated, as well as help you find solutions to challenges students face.

Civil rights law says schools cannot discriminate based on race/ethnicity, disability status, English learner status, sex (includes sexual orientation, gender identity and pregnancy) or national origin (which may include religion and immigrant status). Keep in mind that if discrimination is based on more than one identity (for example, race and disability status) multiple civil rights laws may apply.
